The advantages of an actively connected photo kite drone over standard drones are 1) increased safety and 2) considerable savings in team resources during autonomous flight. No piloting is required during operation up to 150 feet above the ground. Actively attached UAS may be used by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) without additional waivers or pilot license requirements. Fotokite Sigma offers full weatherproof rating, power and data transmission over the leash and can fly in harsh weather conditions and remain in the air continuously for more than 24 hours compared to the shorter flight times of free-flying drones. Planned benefits and features of the partnership between Axon Air and Fotokite are:
- Evidence Management: Photo kite video footage is built right into Axon Evidence, giving agencies a holistic view of what is happening in a particular incident / investigation without the need to use an alternate application or tool to view the aerial photo.
- Live streaming: The agency’s command center staff can use the Axon Aware situation recognition software to see what is happening on site in real time and thus make resources available more quickly and efficiently.
- Program Management: Agencies save time and money operating this system through simplified program management that does not require federal Part 107 licenses (drone pilot) or an FAA approval certificate (COA).
- Scalable situation awareness from the air: Traditional drone programs require public safety teams to call trained pilot teams to each scene in which they are deployed. As a result, response times are slowed down by the availability of pilots on site. Fotokite technology enables scalable detection of flight scenes without the need for pilots to be on site, and enables law enforcement agencies to gain early situational awareness and incident recordings when it matters most.
“This partnership with Fotokite is changing the way our law enforcement customers see, assess and respond to crisis situations in real time,” said Jeff Kunins, CPO of Axon CPP and EVP Software. “This program is a great addition to agencies with existing drone programs as it enables a wider range of incidents. For agencies who haven’t yet deployed a drone program, this is a great and easy way to get started. “
“We are excited to work exclusively with Axon to provide a specially designed tool to first responders in public safety. Our actively connected UAS technology will provide Axon’s customers directly with the integrated product they need, ”said Christopher McCall, CEO of Fotokite. “Whether the use case is traffic control, vehicle accident scene management, search and rescue, or routine patrol, users can simply press a button for a live streaming bird’s eye view of an incident.”
The Fotokite system is designed for public safety and will be available to law enforcement customers in the US and Canada exclusively through the Axon Air program starting in 2021. The price details will be announced before the start.
