Europe exams the way forward for city air mobility – Drones Information

· AMU-LED aims to demonstrate the safe integration of all types of drone operations into urban environments in order to realize increasingly sustainable, intelligent cities.

· The project contributes to the initiative of the European Union to ensure the safe integration of drones in Europe, also known as underground space.

· The project will combine different exercises, including Passenger transportation in air taxis, Transport and delivery of goods, police surveillance and support for emergency services.

In 2022 some of the largest demonstrations ever carried out will take place in three European countries: Spain, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.

· 17 companies and institutions are involved in the project Europe and the United States.

Madrid, January 21st 2021 – Air taxis, cargo delivery drones or unmanned emergency systems is an ever closer reality. Urban air mobility (UAM) will help us create more sustainable and smarter cities.

This new reality looming on the horizon has led to it AMU-LED is an H2020 project the European Union, the main purpose of which is to demonstrate the safe integration of different types of drone operations into the skies of our city.

It is an ambitious initiative that will be built over two years with the ultimate goal of being one of the largest demonstration of mobility services with aircraft in urban environments by 2022. Several venues were selected in three different countries: Santiago de Compostela in Spain, Cranfield in the Great Britain, Amsterdam and Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

A total of 17 different companies from Europe and the USA are involved in the project. Coordinated by everisThe consortium consists of a group of very prominent actors within the sector: Airbus, AirHub, Altitude Angel, ANRA Technologies, Boeing Research & Technology-Europe, FADA-CATEC, Cranfield University, EHang, ENAIRE, Gemeente Amsterdam, INECO, ITG, Jeppesen, NLR, Space53 and Tecnalia.

More than 100 flight hours in urban areas

The exercises planned in AMU-LED include more than 100 flight hours, in which various unmanned flight systems are combined and various scenarios, use cases and applications are taken into account. These consist of Air taxi operations, cargo transportation, delivery of goods and medical equipment, inspection of infrastructures, police surveillance and emergency services support.

Using real-world tests and simulations, the project will examine and demonstrate how roads can be relieved, the transport of people and goods improved, travel times shortened, flexibility increased, pollution reduced and traffic accidents reduced.

Thanks to the data from the various tests, AMU-LED can provide valuable information to regulatory authorities such as EASA. Ultimately, the goal is to support the development and definition of laws and regulations in the field of urban air mobility.

A commitment to the development of air traffic management

AMU-LED is an H2020 project of the European Union that is part of the joint company SESAR (Grant Agreement No. 101017702). SESAR aims to ensure the modernization of air traffic management in Europe, where urban air mobility (UAM) is a key element. It requires the creation of new concepts and regulations in order to design, structure and industrialize a sustainable and interoperable system in current air traffic.

The extensive and multidisciplinary team of professionals at AMU-LED consists of experts in air traffic solutions, simulation and drone operations, research technology centers, legislators and experts in tests and demonstrators.
