H3 Dynamics: Adapting to battle in opposition to COVID-19 – Drones Information


When Taras Wankewycz, founder and CEO of H3 Dynamics, started the company five years ago, he saw endless uses for DBX, an autonomous delivery platform for various forms of ground robots and drones. These protection systems could be installed in various remote industrial locations, even on rooftops in megacities, so that locally based scanner robots could become the eyes and ears of skilled engineers – possibly located in other parts of the world. That vision proved correct when COVID-19 dramatically changed the way the world works.

Since international travel is becoming nearly impossible, skilled engineers cannot simply be deployed at remote locations for expert inspections at locations such as dams, solar parks, water reservoirs, or other types of structures. With its cloud-based inspection service platform, H3 Zoom, H3 Dynamics has enabled experts to review the results of an inspection performed by an integrated machine learning workflow without having to go to the actual site.

H3 Dynamics has developed a platform for digital services that ingests unstructured data and outputs ready-to-use reports.

This digital services platform can be connected to several types of data collection devices, usually cameras – on cell phones that are mounted on fixed masts, and now mobile robots that can be used on site.

To automate data collection with mobile robots, the company developed robust protection systems that can connect to the Internet and charge the batteries of various third-party drones or ground robots. Such base stations send the data collected by robots to the H3 Dynamic digital service platform. There, data from the physical world is converted into useful insights via artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning in the cloud, which the end user needs to activate the necessary actions.

The company provides customers with valuable results that result from autonomous data processing and data acquisition as an end-to-end solution.

The first digital services from H3 Dynamics address security challenges for built environments in smart cities and target commercial / residential real estate.

“Being based in Singapore, we are surrounded by buildings that make real estate a logical first entry point – our first use case focused on accelerating the inspection of building facades in Asian megacities,” said Taras. “Although Singapore is a modern city, the built environment is aging. After more and more reports of falling facade elements from tall buildings, a law was recently passed to improve facade control of all buildings in Singapore. This created a real need in this area. However, this is not a Singapore problem. It’s a global problem as more and more megacities are emerging. “

Manual inspections: tedious, error-prone, paper-based and expensive

The problem with inspecting building facades is that it is a lengthy, manual, and expensive process. And there are various challenges associated with it.

“It typically takes up to 8 weeks to inspect a building and costs tens of thousands of dollars,” said Taras. “Manual inspection is very dangerous and prone to human error, which can lead to breakdowns if errors are overlooked. The process is also paper based, which hinders the ability to keep track of the status of defects and repairs over time. “

H3 Dynamics felt this was necessary because the paper-based and manual inspection of building facades is simply not scalable and secure enough to meet the needs of Asian megacities. There are also no easy ways to measure the condition of buildings over time without a digital starting point.

Automated inspections and monitoring: Safer, faster, better and cheaper

With a digital fault mapping solution based on intelligent processing in the cloud, as well as autonomous drones or robots that are used as scanners, the whole process will be safer, faster, better and cheaper.

The 4 to 8 week inspection process can be shortened to a few hours, which cuts working time by 97%. Reduced manpower and the diversion of valuable resources into higher-value business areas offer productivity increases of over 70%. The solution also identifies 20% more errors than the human process. A digital track record for all buildings inspected through this process makes it easy to monitor for errors and repairs.

“To ensure that it is easy and intuitive for users, we have different interfaces for different parts of the value chain. For example, certified professional engineers can validate and confirm the results of our AI solution. Meanwhile, portfolio owners can visualize the status of the inspections and high-level insights based on results across multiple structures, ”said Taras.

“We are currently introducing this in Singapore. Our main clients include JTC Corporation, a state-owned real estate developer and manager; Housing Development Board, a government agency responsible for public housing; and SMRT, the local rail transport system. To date, over 300 buildings have been inspected. That’s over 14 TB of collected data and 4 million images validated. “

The DBX from H3 Dynamics is now integrated into the SAP Asset Intelligence Network.

“With SAP, we have created a seamless connection between the errors identified and the customers who are SAP-enabled,” said Taras. “This enables SAP customers to automate work orders for repairs, track the status of work orders, and generate reports that can be shared with contractors for a unified view of problems and solutions.”
