LiDAR USA Achieves Better Location Accuracy On The Floor and In The Air with Honeywell IMU – Drones Information
LiDAR USA integrates and manufactures high-performance LiDAR systems and mapping software for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and ground vehicles used for surveying and mapping. When looking for a high performance and cost effective inertia measurement unit to combine with their broad offering, it was of paramount importance to find a scalable and proven solution that would meet their customers’ needs. After extensive testing and customer feedback, LiDAR USA decided on the HG4930 MEMS inertial measurement unit from Honeywell.
LiDAR USA is more than a well-known manufacturer of LiDAR systems (Light Detection and Ranging) and 3D mapping devices. It is a family run business that is run and built by the father and son team Jeff and Daniel Fagerman.
Prior to joining LiDAR USA in 1999, Jeff spent more than a decade at a technical equipment manufacturer in Huntsville, Alabama, where he graduated as a surveyor with a degree in photogrammetry.
Now, more than 20 years later, LiDAR USA has built a reputation for making portable, high quality LiDAR systems that are used by customers around the world.
“Most of our systems weigh five kilograms or less, so they can be easily carried in a backpack and are light enough to attach to your car, motorcycle, boat or UAV without sacrificing performance. Portability is important to us, and that’s why we’ve continued to reduce the overall size and weight of our systems. “- Jeff Fagerman
The lightweight design of LiDAR USA products is one of their key differentiators and one of the reasons the team is careful when choosing their inertial measurement unit.
For most 3D mapping components, portability is usually of the utmost importance and can often be a performance hit. However, LiDAR USA wanted to continue to offer high quality systems at an affordable price. To do this, they had to find the right suppliers who could meet their growing customer requirements.
LiDAR USA’s response was to implement Honeywell’s HG4930 MEMS inertial measurement unit into its LiDAR systems.
The HG4930 has proven to be the most competitive overall value when comparing size, weight, price, and performance. Its lightweight and robust design helps customers improve the speed and maneuverability of their UAVs.
Additionally, the innate location accuracy of the HG4930 helps customers using LiDAR USA create mobile maps from a ground based vehicle.
“We tested daylight in different configurations from many different companies. We were able to test the HG4930 along with four or five other inertial gauges and it wasn’t long before we noticed that it outperformed the competition and gave us exactly what we needed, ”said Jeff Fagerman.
“There is a sweet spot there that offers us the right price-performance ratio and at the same time meets our size requirements. The HG4930 fits this space perfectly, and that’s why we chose Honeywell. It meets the stated specifications and exceeds the needs of our customers, ”said Daniel Fagerman.
For a small company like LiDAR USA, finding the right company to provide support through customer integration and setup was also a critical factor. Fortunately, the Honeywell HGuide team was there to help every step of the way.
The HG4930’s proven reliability and dependability caught the attention of LIDAR USA, but what they sold was Honeywell’s customer service. Unlike other large suppliers, Honeywell paid attention to what LiDAR USA needed in an IMU and worked across functions to help them implement it into their various offerings.
“We work with a lot of companies that cost millions of dollars and most of them don’t hear. They have no control. You can’t get them to change a button or a cable – Honeywell wants to listen.”
This open line of communication was the real difference in LiDAR USA’s partnership with Honeywell. Jeff Fagerman continues, “The product lines are good and I enjoy working with people.”
“It was pretty painless when we decided to bite the bullet and go with Honeywell. They keep checking in with us to make sure we have everything we need, ”said Daniel Fagerman.
Honeywell and LiDAR USA are entering into a partnership that will continue to benefit customers in surveying and mapping in the years to come.
