US Navy selects L3Harris applied sciences for the second section of unmanned aerial programs demonstration – Drones Information

ARLINGTON, Texas – The U.S. Navy has selected L3Harris Technologies (NYSE: LHX) to take part in the second phase of a demonstration to identify and evaluate unmanned aerial systems that can operate in harsh operational environments without additional support systems.

L3Harris was one of two teams selected by AIRWorks of the Naval Air Warfare Center Air Division (NAWCAD) in collaboration with IMPAX to participate in the three-week demonstration in Yuma, Arizona later that year.

The demonstration is part of a multi-phase selection process to evaluate the latest technologies, to provide information on future acquisition strategies and to meet performance-oriented competitive requirements for potential OT (Other Transaction) awards for prototyping. Award-winning OTs have the potential to become part of a future record-breaking program estimated to be worth up to $ 1 billion.

L3Harris’ F3R-90 uses patented hybrid quadrotor technology, which enables it to take off in tight spaces with a small crew and to switch quickly and accurately between horizontal and vertical flight. The aircraft differs from existing “runway-independent” unmanned aerial systems, which do not require a separate launch vehicle or recovery device. It offers improved capability, portability, and reduced operational footprint for military and commercial unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) applications.

“L3Harris’ FVR-90 offers unique technology that other unmanned aerial systems cannot,” said Dave Duggan, president of Precision Engagement Systems at L3Harris. β€œThis unmanned system can be used in harsh weather environments and in multiple domains. The FVR-90 provides vertical takeoff and landing capability that we believe can give the Navy the control it needs to complete its vital missions. “
