USAF Selects Drone Inspection System as Finalist in AFWERX FUSION Problem – Drones Information


AFWERX, the catalyst for driving innovation within the U.S. Air Force, announced Easy Aerial as one of the top 92 participating teams from around the world battling to build the Base of the Future Challenge.

The AFWERX Challenge focuses on six topics: basic security, fail-safe installation, use of technology for operational effectiveness, reverse engineering, culture of innovation and the well-being of airmen and families. The suggestions selected for further development represent innovative solutions that range from new basic security technologies and VR training modules to virtual assistants and apps for the development of wellness and management.

The Leveraging technology for the challenge of operational effectiveness strives to use artificial intelligence, additive manufacturing and machine learning to build an air force base that will become an innovation leader. With the rebuilding of Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida, the US Air Force has the potential to create an installation that will be a model for tomorrow’s air force bases by implementing cutting-edge operational technology, automation, artificial intelligence and digital integration, and cybersecurity, to build the latest installation and ensure it becomes a premier hub of innovation for industry and government.

The surveillance and inspection solutions based on Easy Aerial drones are designed and manufactured in the USA and are fully autonomous, weatherproof, portable, robust and specially designed for military applications. The company has developed an autonomous solution for the rapid maintenance inspection of large aircraft. The system has a connected drone that is attached to a self-steering base station and moves around an aircraft to take high-resolution images and videos from multiple angles and to save them safely. The system significantly reduces the time required for up-to-date routine and emergency inspections in large hangars with scaffolding around the aircraft.

The AFWERX Fusion 2020 Showcase recently featured 370 of the participating teams, selected from a record breaking 1,500 entries received for the Base of the Future Challenge. Throughout the event, the teams presented their solutions to a panel of subject matter experts from the relevant sectors of the Air Force. The Future Base theme was inspired by Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, which was decimated by Hurricane Michael, a Category 5 storm that occurred in 2018. For decades Tyndall has been home to generations of aviators and their families. After the storm, almost 500 buildings were irreparably destroyed or damaged. Fortunately, Congress approved a $ 3 billion military construction rebuilding program, which raised hopes that Tyndall would reappear stronger than ever. The target initiative aims to create a sturdy installation that will become a universal symbol of innovation and excellence that can be scaled across the U.S. Air Force.
