Virginia to Launch Unmanned Aerial Methods Flight Info Change – Drones Information
The Virginia Department of Aviation (DOAV) and the Center for Innovative Technology (CIT) announced today the launch of a flight information exchange pilot program in Virginia that allows state and local governments to exchange information between unmanned aerial vehicle (UAS) stakeholders. and political concerns while keeping airspace open, secure, and integrated into the federal aviation administration’s control of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The Virginia Flight Information Exchange will ensure that the Commonwealth balances both the safest and most open UAS airspace in the country.
The Virginia Flight Information Exchange is a platform for state and local government agencies to publish and share advice information with UAS Service Suppliers (USS), unmanned system operators and the public to promote transparency and public security. The pilot program will evaluate the benefits of exchanging information, provide thoughtful regulation, and demonstrate a government-supported approach to UAS communication and coordination.
The pilot program was developed in a public-private collaboration with the Virginia DOAV, CIT, and its Virginia Unmanned Systems Center, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and Advanced Technology Applications (ATA), a leading data science and technology company in Northern Virginia.
“Innovation is critical to the continued development of the multimodal transportation network in Virginia.” Virginia Transport Secretary Shannon Valentine said. “The development of the Virginia Flight Information Exchange shows Virginia’s commitment to collaborative solutions and the future of the emerging UAS industry.”
The Virginia Flight Information Exchange will be the first state-sponsored authoritative Supplemental Data Service Provider (SDSP) to exist in the FAA’s UAS Traffic Management (UTM), an ecosystem of infrastructure and protocols that enables low-level management of drone operations.
“With one of the country’s strongest technology workforces, Virginia has been an aggressive early adopter of UAS, and the Flight Information Exchange strengthens our Commonwealth’s reputation as an industry leader.” Trade and Commerce Secretary Brian Ball said. “By working with industry leaders in Virginia such as ATA, we are supporting the growth in capabilities and capabilities of unmanned aerial systems across the Commonwealth. We are very proud that Virginia plays a key role in UAS, and it is exciting to be part of this rapidly developing industry. “
“It is great to work with a team that is ready to work, experiment and share the insights we have gained.” said Craig Parisot, CEO of ATA, LLC. “We are helping states and municipalities to acquire the necessary technical skills, while providing an important example of how states can support the growth of UAS and commercial UTM solutions in a way that best serves the public interest.”
